Black History Month: Havard Class of 2021

Some people believe that things are not changing for the betterment of African-Americans. Although change is slow in many cases, it’s still evolving. This is why I like to spotlight the positive changes that occur in the African-American communities nationally and locally.

In celebration of Black History Month, I chose to spotlight Harvard Law School’s Class of 2021, one of the largest classes comprising African-American Doctors of Jurisprudence (J.D.) in the university’s history.

While the nation’s flagship university was once tainted with segregation and various forms of racist oppression, Harvard has undergone dramatic changes throughout the years; The influence of various social movements and reforms is evident.

According to an article in The Washington Post, September 1959 was when 18 African-American students entered the university, comprising only 1.5 percent of the first-year class. Those 18 African-American students who Harvard admitted in 1959 opened the door for the 18 percent admitted in 2021.

Change is inevitable. Change is good.
