Pondering on Gods Invention
Sometimes I enjoy sitting around thinking about all the really cool things God has created. I know I should appreciate creation, but invention sounded a bit cleverer. Sure, it’s easy to see all the really beautiful things God has created but there are tons of things that are just plain cool.
I was pondering on God’s creation of memory. It’s so vastly intricate and complex. To me it’s a mystery how it works and does not work. What I love about it is how it ties memories to taste, sound, colors and smells to name a few. Memories can totally change your entire day when you simply hear a certain song or smell a certain smell. For example, I could be having a very Monday, Monday and hear a song from the 80s and, boom, a flood of great memories come pouring into my head. Most people would agree the 80s was the best decade, or it might just be me. Most of my favorite memories have 80s music playing in the background. Sure, I love most music from the 70s as well but it’s the 80s that really do it for me.
I remember one time my older brother let me hang out with him and his friends as they were going go-cart racing on a Friday night. Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like a Wolf ” was playing on the radio, and there were not enough seats in the single cab pickup so one of my older brothers’ friends who happened to be a girl had to sit on my lap the whole way.
Now, being only 13 or 14 out with the big kids, this was a monumental event that would have my friends hooked on every word of this story Monday at school. We raced go-carts until midnight then off to Whataburger for a late-night burger. It was a night to remember. So, every time that song comes on it brings me right back to the night. Another big trigger for me is food and cooking food.
Every time I eat or cook lasagna, chickee dumplings or meat loaf, to name a few, I always without fail think of my mom. She was a fantastic home cook who always cooked comfort food. These are always wonderful memories to relive. I still haven’t perfected my mom’s chickee dumplings recipe although I have tried countless times, I can never get the dumplings just right. I suppose there are some things that only a mom can get just right.
The next time you want to summon up some great memories just play some of your favorite old songs or cook a meal you had when you were just a young’un and see if it doesn’t bring up some warm memories from long ago.
This is Will B. saying The Cars sang it best when they sang “Let the Good Times Roll.”
