Olney Academic UIL to send two teams, five individuals to state contest

Olney High School placed fifth of 30 schools that participated in the regional University Interscholastic League competition meet at Grayson College in Denison, and will send five individuals and two academic teams to the state level competition.

The seven Olney teams competed on April 22-23, with the Mathematics team coached by Courtney Hantz emerging with top honors. The Numbers Sense team coached by Superintendent Greg Roach won a second-place, wildcard spot with highest second-place team score in the four UIL regions. The Numbers Sense team also scored higher than the winning Number Sense teams in two of the four state regions. The team members are Peyton Kulhanek, Sarah Roach, Aidyn Bitner, and Angel Alvarado

Math team members Aidyn Bitner, Angel Alvarado and Jennifer Martinez also won individual berths at the state competition. Accounting team member Peyton Kulhanek and Informative Speaking team member Adelade Edgington also will represent Olney at state as individual competitors. Informative Speaking, coached by Kim Stephens and Lani Caffey. Adelade Edgington, 2nd place and individual state qualifier.

Literary Criticism, coached by Kathy Harper, placed second. The team members are Jennifer Martinez, Sarah Roach, Richard Walp, and Halli Cuba. Jennifer Martinez, 4th place, Sarah Roach, 5th place.

Mathematics, coached by Courtney Hantz, won its category and qualified for the state competition. The team members are Aidyn Bitner, Angel Alvarado, Jennifer Martinez, and Sarah Roach. Aidyn Bitner, 2nd place and individual state qualifier, Angel Alvarado, 3rd place tie and individual state qualifier, Jennifer Martinez, 3rd place tie and individual state qualifier.
