Bobby J. Moody

Bobby J. Moody went to be with his Lord on August 24, 2017. Bob was born to Iris and Ernest Moody on May 18, 1930, in Ballinger, Texas. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 1952 and Baylor Law School in 1955. He was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1955. He served in the United States Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base, Biggs Air Force Base and Aviano Air Force Base, Italy serving in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1955-1958. He practiced law in Lubbock for 51 years beginning in 1958. Bob was active in the Lubbock community with service to First Baptist Church, Lubbock County Bar Association, City Bank Board of Directors, Goodwill Industries, West Texas Museum Association, South Plains Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, Lubbock Symphony Orchestra Board, South Plains Trust and Estate Council, Masonic Lodge, and Khiva Shrine. He was a 59-year member of the Lubbock Lions Club where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow. Bob was a member of the Board of Trustees at both Wayland Baptist University and Hardin-Simmons University and was also a Deacon and lifelong Baptist.

His proudest accomplishments were his family, serving his law clients and scouting. In 1949, Bob met Charlotte Lamb on the Hardin-Simmons campus. Three years later, they married on August 29, 1952, which started an adventure that lasted 65 years. They had two wonderful daughters, Paula Ann and Charlotte Leigh, with whom they shared countless family memories. Bob served as a troop leader to hundreds of young men during his fifty-year association with Boy Scouts of America. He served on the board and as president of the South Plains Council. He attended many national jamborees and was an instructor at Philmont teaching wood badge camps to other leaders in the area. In 1971, Bob was awarded the Silver Beaver for Distinguished Service to Boyhood, joining other notable recipients such as presidents, astronauts, captains of industry and prominent athletes. 

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, daughters Pam Moody and Leigh Potokar and husband Tim, grandchildren Matthew Potokar, Sarah Potokar Jones and husband Christopher, Andrew Potokar, Emily Scott and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by hundreds of Boy Scouts, countless business associates, friends in Christ, and everyone who had the time to listen to his stories. Bob never met a stranger.

Visitation will be at Sanders Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, August 26th. Burial will take place at the True Cemetery in Young County on Monday, August 28th at 2 p.m. A memorial service to honor Bob’s life will be held at First Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 29th at 2 p.m. 

The family would like to thank Bob’s many caregivers for their compassion and kindness over the last several months.
