OJH Makes U.S. News & World Report’s List of Nation’s Best Junior High Schools

Olney Junior High School has earned a place among the best middle schools in Texas in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings, with OJH students outperforming statewide averages in both math and reading.

Olney Junior High ranked No. 313 among Texas middle schools, according to U.S. News, which bases its rankings on factors including performance on state-required tests and how well schools prepare students for high school.

The rankings showed 62 percent of OJH students scored at or above the proficient level in math, compared with 50 percent districtwide and 44 percent statewide.

In reading, 57 percent of OJH students scored at or above proficiency — matching the Olney ISD average and topping the Texas average of 51 percent.

OJH Principal Ed Berngen credited the recognition to a community-wide effort.

This achievement reflects the dedication of our incredible staff, who hold our students to high standards while supporting them every step of the way. It speaks to our students, who take on challenges and do the hard work required to succeed. Most importantly, it highlights the unwav- ering support of our parents and the entire Olney community. The recognition follows Olney High School’s recent appearance in U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools rankings, giving Olney ISD another reason to celebrate its students and educators.
