Cubs, Lady Cubs Build Sweat Equity in Summer Workouts
Olney athletes put in the work during summer workouts While many students are enjoying a slower pace this summer, dozens of Olney Cubs and Lady Cubs have been spending their mornings on the practice field and in the weight room, preparing for what they hope will be a successful 2026-27 athletic season.
Under the direction of Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Dustin Altmiller, Olney ISD has completed five weeks of its summer strength and conditioning program, with athletes turning out consistently despite the heat and humidity.
Coach Altmiller said between 25 and 30 junior high athletes and 30 to 35 high school athletes have attended workouts each week, demonstrating a commitment to improving before the school year begins.
“Our athletes have been showing up every day and have been continuing to improve their strength, their quickness and their speed,” Coach Altmiller said. “A majority of our Cubs and Lady Cubs have made the determination that they want to fight for playoff spots and district championships in everything they do, and they have been willing this summer to put the work in to get there.”
Coach Altmiller praised the athletes’ attitude while stressing that summer conditioning is only the beginning.
“We are very proud of their attitude and effort they have put in this summer,” he said. “But as we have told them all summer long, it’s not how you start something, it’s how you finish it.”
With several weeks of preparation remaining before the new school year, Coach Altmiller said the Cubs and Lady Cubs are focused on ending the summer on a strong note.
“This group is looking to finish this summer out with a roar as we get ready to begin a new school year!” he said.
If the enthusiasm shown during summer workouts is any indication, Olney’s athletes are determined to make plenty of noise once the games begin, with their sights set on district championships and postseason appearances across the school’s athletic programs.
