OHH Board Hires Architect to Evaluate 1927 Building

The Olney Hamilton Hospital Board of Directors unanimously approved a $32,000 contract with historic renovation architect Norman Olson to evaluate the existing hospital buildings, originally constructed in 1927 and expanded in 1964.

Mr. Olson will prepare a master plan that examines the buildings’ condition, identifies potential future uses, and provides the documentation needed to pursue grants, fundraising, and historic rehabilitation financing.

Board members said the study is the foundation for a long-term vision that could preserve the landmark hospital while creating space for new healthcare services.

“This is our initial research and development,” Board Chairman Dale Lovett told fellow directors. “It gives us footing. If at that point we say this can happen, then we have a choice to make.”

The hospital district hopes to use another round of New Market Tax Credits to renovate the aging structures after the new hospital opens. The renovated campus could provide offices for behavioral health and counseling services, physician clinics, and housing for traveling physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals.

Mr. Lovett told the board that approving the study does not commit the district to renovating the building, but instead provides the information needed to determine whether the project is feasible.
