Trusting God in Every Season
Mark 5:19 NASB
Life often brings seasons we do not expect. Plans change, circumstances arise, and sometimes the path before us looks very different from what we once imagined. Yet for those who are in Christ through the supernatural work of regeneration—accomplished by God in the heart through the power of the Holy Spirit—even these moments are not outside His purpose.
After crossing the Sea of Galilee, Jesus arrived in the region of the Gerasenes. Immediately He was met by a man who lived among the tombs and was possessed by an unclean spirit. This man had long been tormented. Chains could not restrain him, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. Day and night he cried out and harmed himself under the control of the demonic forces that had taken hold of his life.
When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell down before Him. The demons within him cried out in fear, recognizing the authority of Christ, calling Him “Jesus, Son of the Most High God.” With divine authority, Jesus commanded the spirits to leave the man. They entered a herd of swine nearby, and the herd rushed down a steep bank into the sea. In an instant, the man who had once lived in torment was set free.
When the people from the region arrived, they saw a sight that astonished them: the man who had once been possessed was now sitting calmly, clothed, and in his right mind. Instead of rejoicing, however, many became afraid and pleaded with Jesus to leave their region. As Jesus prepared to depart, the man who had been healed begged to go with Him. Understandably, he desired nothing more than to follow the One who had changed his life forever.
But Jesus gave him a different command. “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” The man obeyed. He went throughout the region of the Decapolis telling others what Jesus had done, and everyone was amazed.
This moment reveals an important lesson. The man longed to travel with Jesus, yet the Lord had a greater purpose for him in that season. Instead of joining the disciples in the boat, he was called to remain behind and testify to God’s mercy. The Lord would use him as a witness of His grace among the very people who already knew him, who would now hear this man—once bound by chains—speaking of the living and eternal God who had set him free from the tyranny of Satan’s domain.
Many believers experience similar moments in life. A door closes. A dream seems delayed. A path changes unexpectedly. In those moments it can be tempting to question why circumstances have turned out differently than planned. But Scripture reminds us that God’s purposes are often greater than our immediate desires.
On Paul’s second missionary journey, he had plans to go into Asia Minor to preach the gospel and plant churches. But the door was closed, for the Holy Spirit did not permit him to go there. Then he attempted to go into Bithynia, but was again prevented. Eventually he came to Troas, where he sought the wisdom of God concerning where he should go. It was there that the Lord gave him a vision calling him to Macedonia, where the gospel would soon be preached and a church planted in the home of a woman named Lydia.
Sometimes the very place we wish we could leave is the place God intends to use us most powerfully. This season calls for trust, humility, service, patience, and faith. It may be a time where the Lord is going to use you to encourage others, to lift people up in prayer, to demonstrate trust in Christ during moments of frustration, or to bear witness to God’s goodness in the midst of difficulty.
Like the man who was healed and sent back to his hometown, believers are called to proclaim the mercy of God wherever He has placed them. Beloved, the Scriptures remind us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” The Scriptures also affirm, “The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.”
In every season of life— whether joyful or challenging— believers can rest in the assurance that God is working out His purposes. When we remain faithful in the place He has assigned to us, He strengthens us to fulfill the work He has set before us. Therefore, go forth and proclaim the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ. Tell others of His death and resurrection, and let the joy of the Lord flow from your life like a wellspring of living water, bearing witness through both your words and your actions to the grace and mercy of God.
