Kailyn Altmiller: Are student dress codes necessary or outdated? Why?

Rai Bond, senior: “They are outdated because students have different styles these days, and it is harder to find clothes that will meet the dress code, and I think they need to be more lenient like it is in college.”

Braelyn Casteel, junior: “Student dress codes are necessary; however, the rules should not be as strict as they are! Students should be able to express themselves without having the constant stress of whether or not they will get dress coded. If the rules were slightly more lenient, I’m certain the dress code would be followed more.” Jaxxon Laurent, junior: “I believe that there should still be dress codes but to a certain extent, I think that Olney’s dress code policy is good because they are kinda lenient but they also will make you change if it is out of the dress code too much.”

Ricco Sandoval, senior: “I think that the student dress is necessary and not outdated at all. I think it is necessary for students because they need to look professional while at school and not have facial hair or wear crop tops. For example, a worker for construction or for a company would not go to work outside of the work dress code because it does not look professional at all. The dress code teaches students about the real world outside of school. Lastly, the dress code is necessary and not outdated at all.” Addison Guerra, junior: “Student dress codes can be seen as both necessary and outdated, but me personally I’d have to favor it’s outdated. The rules set in place limit young people’s self expression. Students can’t flourish if always pinned down by rules based on the way that they look. Also, everyone is built differently so rules aren’t able to be applied properly for each individual. Dress code rules contribute to acts of sexism and racism in some cases. These rules set in place cause more problems than they solve; therefore, they should be eliminated or updated to reflect the current norms.”
