OES, OJH Enjoy Half-Day After Thanksgiving

For junior high and elementary school students, a half day is approaching after Thanksgiving break. On Thursday, Dec. 4, middle and elementary school students will be dismissed after lunch. The elementary and junior high will be hosting UIL contests on Dec. 5.

The half day doesn’t include high school students.

“High school will still have a full day,” Superintendent Matt Caffey said. “There is a tremendous amount of preparation that goes into conducting elementary and junior high UIL and we wanted to give staff an opportunity to get everything done during normal working hours when all staff can be present to help. So, the half day is only a half day for students at OES and OJH.”

Transportation will be provided for students on all campuses regardless of the half day.

“Yes, buses will run twice to take home elementary and junior high kids then come back for high school students,” Caffey said.

The junior high and elementary students will be released from school at 12:30 p.m.

“Releasing students at 12:30 will allow us to be sure that all students PK - 8 have had lunch before they go home,” Caffey said.

Caffey explains why the high school will not be included in this half day.

“There is not as much to be done to prepare the high school for UIL day and high school staff have no coaching responsibilities for the UIL day, so the disruption of a half day for OHS was not necessary,” Caffey said.
