The Book Will Be Opened

Are You Living for Earthly Riches or Eternal Redemption? Today I want to ask you a searching question: Are you more concerned with earthly success and comfort than with the eternal state of your soul? Imagine— what if the Lord Jesus Christ were to return today in all His majesty?

Behold, He comes, clothed in splendor and riding upon the clouds. A sharp two-edged sword proceeds from His mouth, proclaiming absolute truth. Upon His robe and thigh is written, “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” You lift your eyes and see Him—His gaze like blazing fire, piercing through every secret of your heart. The noise around you fades into silence. Then, He speaks your name. It echoes like rolling thunder across the heavens, like the crash of waves in a raging sea.

Your heart stops. You behold Him—His face shining brighter than the sun, a crown of many diadems upon His head, His feet like burnished bronze glowing from the furnace, and the train of His robe filling the temple. The glory is overwhelming. And then—He opens a book. It is the Book of Life, a record kept since before the foundation of the world.

As He opens it, you see the scars in His hands—scars that purchased salvation. Suddenly, your entire life flashes before your mind. You remember the preacher He sent—the one who sat with you, patiently explaining the gospel, urging you to come to the cross where Christ was crucified in your place. You recall how he invited you to church, yet you shrugged it off. Though you knew the Scriptures say not to forsake assembling together, especially as the Day draws near, it wasn’t important to you.

Then comes the dread—memories of the hidden sins you never confessed. The language, the music, the lustful images, the selfish schemes. The desire for popularity, even if it meant wounding others. The secret rebellion. The pride. The moments you thought were private are now laid bare before the Holy One.

And then, His voice breaks the silence once more: “Depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness, for I never knew you.” Your name is not found in the Book of Life. You cry out for mercy, but mercy is not found. The time for repentance is over. You are cast into outer darkness—into the eternal fire, where the worm does not die and the flames never cease. Justice is now served by the hand of the Judge. Oh, the unimaginable weight of God’s divine wrath! It is far beyond what our limited minds can grasp.

Understand , God’s Grace is Greater—But It Is Only Given to the Humble. James offers a sober warning in the verse above. God sets Himself against the proud. The word “opposed” implies an active resistance—God stands in battle array against those who refuse to humbly receive His Son, Jesus Christ. But to the humble— to those who fall at the foot of the cross in repentance—He gives a greater grace.

James continues this call to repentance in verses 7–10: “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” This is not a suggestion. It is a divine call to turn, to weep over sin, and to seek the mercy that is still available through Jesus Christ.

A Final Plea: Since God gives a greater grace to the humble, do not delay. Come to Him without hesitation. Cling to the cross of Christ as your only hope. Repent— turn from your sin, forsake the ways of this world, and believe in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other name by which you must be saved. Run to Him while grace is still offered. The Judge is coming— but today, the Savior still

calls.

“But He gives a greater grace.” Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”
