Cameras to Be Installed at Olney Courthouse for Custody Drop-offs
The Young County Commissioners Court has approved funding for a child safety dropoff camera system to be installed at the Olney Sub-Courthouse to provide a secure location for child custody exchanges.
During the July 28 Commissioners Court meeting, County Clerk Cheryl Young presented a proposal from Olney Justice of the Peace Judge Joey Stewart to use his office’s technology funds to pay for improved security measures at the annex, including upgraded locks and the new camera system.
Judge Stewart’s technology funds will cover the $1,461 cost for the locks, while the Commissioners approved a separate purchase of the camera system, which will include sight, sound, installation, and training for $300.
“This is the child safe exchange camera system to be installed on the south side of the annex,” Ms. Young said. “It will provide video and audio monitoring to ensure safety during custody drop-offs.”
County Judge Win Graham confirmed the location and asked about monitoring procedures. Commissioner Stacy Creswell suggested placing the video feed in Judge Stewart’s office.
“That way if somebody needed a copy of what went on, he could have it there,” Mr. Creswell said. “Plus, if something’s wrong, he’s the one you want going out there.”
The Commissioners voted unanimously, 5-0, to approve the purchase and installation of the camera system.
The camera is expected to serve as a deterrent to conflict during custody exchanges and provide video documentation if disputes arise, enhancing safety for families using the courthouse annex for child drop-offs.
