KOB To Install New Lights at Tom Griffin Park
Keep Olney Beautiful (KOB) is brightening up Tom Griffin Park with a new lighting project aimed at improving safety and usability for the community. The organization has raised funds to replace broken or weak lights on all 15 poles throughout the park and has contracted Willen Electric to handle the installation.
“These lights will replace all the old pole lighting throughout the park,” said KOB President Kyle Turner. “Very few currently work, and those that do are very dim.The goal of this project is to keep the park safe during the early morning and late evening hours when folks like to go walk and exercise while it’s cooler outside. It will also keep the pool area lit up and hopefully prevent any mischief from taking place at the park.”
While Mr. Turner noted the new lights are not intended to be a decorative addition to the park, he emphasized that they will serve as an important safety feature for park users If any funds remain after installation, KOB plans to explore decorative lighting around the walking trail. The group has also begun discussing the possibility of adding an awning over the playground equipment, although Mr. Turner said such a project would be costly and require significant fundraising efforts.
The lights have already been ordered, but no installation date has been set. The new lighting is the latest project in a years-long effort by KOB to upgrade Tom Griffin Park. The group spearheaded fundraising for the City’s new swimming pool, which opened last year, and put in the playground equipment, pavilions, and walking trail in previous years.
