Appreciating

My grandparents died when I was fairly young. Even when they were alive, I never had many opportunities to visit or be around my grandparents. Even when I did have the opportunity to visit them, I never really appreciated what they had to offer. Often when we are younger, we seem to not appreciate people or things we have in our life.

Since moving to Olney, I have had many opportunities to visit and chat with some of Olney’s more mature citizens. I have found great value in their knowledge.

From the stories they tell I learn a great deal about the history of Olney, how things used to be in simpler times and advice on a better way to handle a situation or of doing something that I would not have ever thought of.

The more mature citizens of Olney are really great to be around and very pleasant. They never lack in conversations and have plenty of funny stories to relive with us. One of the things I most enjoy is their manners and common courtesy. There is much more they could offer you with a short or long visit. I will let you discover one of Olney’s most important resources.

The best place to visit with and get to know these more mature and older community members is at the Olney Cub Center, also known as Young County Olney Senior Cub Center.

Director Angela Lockard and Activity Director Candy Blair have done a magnificent job updating the Center’s programs. One focus they are trying to change is letting people know this is not just a gathering spot for the elderly and retired - this is a community center to bring people of all ages together to enjoy each other’s company. The Cub Center still provides meals on wheels, a nutritious economical lunch five days a week, plenty of fun activities like bingo and game days and days when medical technicians come in to check blood pressure and other vital signs.

The community center is the perfect place for the old and young to gather and fellowship over lunch, game days or special events like dances and potluck game night.

I highly recommend setting aside some time to attend a lunch or event at the Cub Center, you might be surprised just how much fun you can have over an afternoon of bingo and lunch.

For event times, hours of operation and much more please visit their Facebook page Young County Olney Senior Cub Center or their website at olneyscc.org This is Will B. saying see yah the Cub Center for lunch and games sometime.
