OPD Arrest Olney Man for Drugs, Weapon
A routine traffic stop turned into a drug and weapons arrest on June 27 when an Olney police officer observed suspicious behavior during a traffic stop that led to the discovery of methamphetamine and a rifle inside a pickup truck.
Olney Police Officer Thomas Moore arrested Casey Dean Dixon, 54, after observing him driving without a seatbelt in a beige 2000 Toyota Tundra around 7:56 p.m. in the 400 block of West Gray Street.
According to Officer Moore’s affidavit, Dixon appeared startled upon seeing the patrol vehicle, immediately looked forward, and leaned back in his seat. Moore attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Dixon accelerated, turning recklessly into the 800 block of North Avenue G. Moore noted that Dixon’s brake lights were defective and that the sharp turn caused the vehicle to fishtail, kicking up dirt onto West Dunnigan Street.
With emergency lights and sirens activated, Moore pursued the vehicle as it turned again into the 800 block of North Avenue F, ultimately pulling into the driveway at 802 North Avenue F.
Dixon admitted he did not have a valid driver’s license and told Officer Moore he was driving fast because he believed someone was following him. Moore noted Dixon was visibly shaking and avoided eye contact— signs the officer associated with nervous behavior.
After confirming that Dixon’s driver’s license was expired, Officer Moore asked for and received permission to search the vehicle. Inside the driver’s seat, he found a Zippo match container with a cellophane baggie containing what appeared to be methamphetamine. The substance weighed 9.25 grams with packaging.
Dixon was immediately taken into custody. A used syringe without a needle was found in the center console, along with a Braztech .22-caliber break-action rifle located between the driver’s seat and console.
After securing the scene with the help of backup officers, Moore transported Dixon to the Young County Jail. He was booked on charges of possession of a controlled substance and subsequently released on bond.
