Volunteers Are Key to Olney Cub Center’s Budget
When I was younger, I didn’t think much about my retirement plans and even less about the importance of senior centers.
Now that my husband and I are in our mid-40s, we realize that retirement is right around the corner. And having been the director at Olney Senior Cub Center for nearly 4 years, I now recognize the value of having a social hub for those who are aging. I witness every day the impact our work has on the lives of seniors; From daily well-visits with Meals on Wheels clients who would otherwise have little to no human contact, to delivering snacks and supplemental food to clients who are food insecure, to hosting free daily activities open to the community- the Cub Center’s impact is apparent!
At the fundamental core of the Cub Center, we are enhancing the lives of those who are aging by providing resources and social outlet because traversing the challenges of aging can be cumbersome especially when accompanied by feelings of isolation and loneliness. And our clients do report feeling happier and healthier since joining the center- that is the exact reason we do what we do- to bring fulfillment and meaning to the lives of those who are aging!
Something the public may be aware of is the challenge that senior centers face in sustainable funding. What you may not be aware of, though, is why it is a perpetual challenge. The challenge in sustainable funding is due in part to legislative shifts and participation levels of the various programs at senior centers. Despite fluctuations in legislature and member participation, our expenses remain relatively the same. How senior centers offset costs is by utilizing volunteers throughout the organization: from delivery drivers, to lawn care, to front desk clerks, to greeters, to kitchen assistants, to receptionists, and beyond.
But that is only the beginning of sustainability at a senior center. The remaining aspect of sustainability is fundraising and garnering support from donors: with fundraising at 4% of the annual budget and unrestricted donations at 10%. The funding formula is designed to benefit the members of the center with affordable meals. And as you can already see, donations are an integral part of supplying those meals.
Here at the Olney Senior Cub Center, we strive daily to make every interaction a quality experience. From our homecooked meals to a friendly smile and conversation, we are providing support for those who are aging. My wish (as the director and an advocate for those who are aging) is that we work together as a community to support the Senior Center through volunteerism, fundraiser attendance, and outright gifts. If you would like to get involved at the center, please reach out to us at (940)564-2782 weekdays from 9am to 2pm. Let’s work together to keep the tradition of senior centers alive for the next generation to come- it is not just vital but necessary to those who are on a fixed income.
