Color Outside the Lines: Color Therapy at Cub Center
The Olney Senior Cub Center was buzzing with laughter, conversation, and a splash of color on July 8, as children and adults gathered for a unique event hosted by local licensed social worker Mona Bernhardt.
The program—centered on coloring therapy— invited participants of all ages to grab a marker, choose a page, and rediscover the simple joy of coloring.
The event, sponsored by Texas New Mexico Power, was filled to capacity, a clear testament to the power of creativity and the appeal of a little childlike fun.
“They say children learn through play,” Ms. Bernhardt said. “I think adults play too—we just don’t do it as often.”
The activity gives adults a chance to be creative, she said. It improves hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, patience, planning skills, and even handwriting. “But most of all, it’s just fun.” she said.
Participants had their pick of coloring books, watercolor pages, markers, and paints.
For many, it was a nostalgic return to childhood. “ “I haven’t done this in 60 years,” one participant said.
Senior Cub Center Director Angela Lockard joined in the fun too. “I feel like I’m having more fun than when I was a kid,” she said.
But beyond the fun, Ms. Bernhardt emphasized the event’s deeper purpose—encouraging self-care and mental well-being. “Mental health doesn’t always have to be heavy,” she said.
