Golfers Shine for Charity at The McClatchy
The Fifth Annual McClatchy Golf Tournament brought a weekend of friendly competition, community spirit, and charitable giving to the Olney Country Club on May 31 and June 1.
With 52 teams participating, the event drew players and spectators from across the region for two days of golf and celebration.
This year’s tournament marked a shift in the calendar, moving from its usual sweltering July date to the last weekend in May—a strategic change made by organizers to beat the Texas summer heat.
“We officially changed the date to the last weekend in May so we can try to beat the July heat,” said Landon Rowe, President of the Olney Recreation Association (ORA).
The tournament was more than just a chance to show off on the green. Entry fees and generous sponsorships—including title sponsor Air Tractor— helped fund scholarships for Olney High School graduates Caleb Johnson and Brenna Madison.
Mr. Johnson graduated last month as the Class of 2025’s salutatorian and plans to attend Texas A&M University.
Ms. Madison, who worked at the Olney Country Club for three years, will attend Midwestern State University.
“This tournament provides scholarships and also helps us improve and maintain our golf course,” Mr. Rowe said. “We are very appreciative of all our sponsors who support the McClatchy.”
The overall winners of this year’s tournament were Eddie Snyder and Steve Fikes, who took home top honors amid a competitive field. Saturday’s festivities also included a Calcutta auction and a barbecue dinner catered by Big Luv’s BBQ of Olney.
The tournament was founded to honor the late Jeff McClatchy, a longtime member of the club and a driving force behind its growth and success.
His legacy was proudly remembered this year as his sons, Mace and Cole, attended the event along with other family members.
