County Hires New Jail Commissary Company
The Young County Commissioners Court has awarded a new food service contract for the Young County Jail to Selrico Services of San Antonio, following the sudden departure of the facility’s current provider.
The decision came after Cell Mate Food Services announced it would cease operations in Texas and stop providing meals at the jail after June 30.
In response, the Commissioners approved a contract with Selrico during their May 26 meeting, upon recommendation from the Sheriff ’s Office, to ensure uninterrupted service.
Selrico’s representative, Jaime Rios, told commissioners the company would provide both a full-time and a part-time employee to prepare meals on-site. The meals will be developed with input from a licensed nutritionist to accommodate special dietary needs and ensure compliance with state standards.
The new contract comes with a 5 percent cost increase.
Meals will cost the county $2.10 per plate, slightly more than previous contracts, but officials said the investment is worth it.
“This is going to be like having another jailer,” said County Judge Win Graham. He noted this is the third food service vendor the county has hired in the past three years—a reflection of the broader challenges rural counties face in maintaining consistent service contracts.
Chief Deputy Chris Moody said the new contract will provide critical support to the jail staff. “Having something like this that has a nutritionist to oversee the special meals will really help,” he said.
Mr. Rios said Selrico is looking to hire locally, with two positions open in Young County. The full-time role pays approximately $40,000 annually plus benefits, and the part-time position pays $18 per hour without benefits, he told the Commissioners.
Selrico Services has experience serving correctional facilities and other institutional clients across Texas and beyond. Mr. Rios assured the court that the company is prepared to meet the jail’s needs and maintain consistency where previous providers have fallen short.
