Council discusses plans for Nurre swearing-in
The Olney City Council discussed plans for swearing in newly elected Councilmember Steven Nurre, who has been hospitalized in Dallas following a serious car accident. Nurre won the open council seat in the Nov. 5 election, but his recovery may delay his physical attendance at council meetings.
At the Nov. 12 meeting, City Secretary Tammy Hourigan explained the official canvass of election results is expected by Nov. 19. Once finalized, the Council can proceed with swearing in Mr. Nurre. Mayor Rue Rogers confirmed that if Mr. Nurre cannot attend the next meeting, officials can travel to Dallas to administer the oath.
“Tammy or I, or whoever is available, can go to him with a notary and administer the oath, and we’ll reflect that in the minutes,” Mayor Rogers said.
The Council noted that Mr. Nurre’s situation is unprecedented but emphasized their flexibility in accommodating his circumstances. “He doesn’t have a timetable for returning to Olney, but he’s looking forward to serving,” Mayor Rogers added. “We’ll work with him so he can participate remotely and stay involved until he’s able to join us in person.”
Ms. Hourigan assured the Council that the city charter allows a member to miss more than four regular meetings with a valid excuse, which applies in Mr. Nurre’s case. Councilmember Thea Sullivan praised the plan, emphasizing the importance of keeping Mr. Nurre engaged despite his recovery. “We’re all ready to work together to make it as smooth as possible for him and for the Council,” she said.
Mayor Rogers said the Council will do what it takes to loop in its new member as quickly as possible: “There’s no playbook for this, but we’re flexible, and it’ll work out for everyone involved.”
