Nurre, Muncy run for Council seat

Candidates Steven Nurre and Kathy Schrader Muncy will compete for the open City Council seat in the Nov. 5 election, candidate filings showed. Mr. Nurre and Ms. Muncy were among 11 candidates who ran for three open Council seats in May.

The winner will fill a seat left open by the departure of Councilmember Harrison Wellman, who moved with his family to Puerto Rico earlier this year. The winner will serve out Mr. Wellman’s ter m, which ends in May 2025, and then may run for a full twoyear term. Mr. Nurre, a retired military veteran, business owner and manager for the Lowes and Tractor Supply chains, said his priorities are “the health and safety of the community,” and restarting the water treatment plant.

“I would like to see what the stalemate is,” he said. “We definitely need it … what could we do at the local level that would save us money because we have the equipment and employees that would lessen the cost of the new plant.”

Creating more housing for people who now commute to Olney for work is another priority. He would “encourage people to either buy or build in the city.”

“The city is doing a great job of taking down the old [dilapidated buildings] which I agree with because it’s a health and safety hazard and brings down property values,” he said. “We could make it easier for people to get new construction permits and make it more inviting to build new or renovate old. We also need contractors coming in.”

Mr. Nurre said his agenda “would be whatever the people want” and added that he has a stake in the City now that his son and grandchildren have moved to town.

“I am willing to listen to anybody,” he said. “I don’t have a personal [agenda]. I’m in it to make Olney better.”

Mrs. Muncy declined to comment.
