12 Olney students inducted in National Honor Society

Twelve Olney students were newly inducted in the National Honor Society on Thursday, Sept 5 “In order to be eligible for NHS, students must uphold the four pillars of scholarship, service, leadership, and character,” NHS sponsor Lani Caffey, said. “To qualify regarding scholarship, students must have a 3.7 GPA. For service, students must be able to show that they have volunteered for community service activities. Character and leadership traits are ranked on teacher recommendation forms.”

The inductees include: Joseth Acuna, Allison Alvarado, Brooklynn Bond, Isaac Delgado Rios, Sawyer Edgington, Nate Elmore, Jeffry Flores, Adrian Gonzalez, Caden Lane, Luke Lane, Lauren Pham, and Morgan Simmons. These students have worked incredibly hard and have shown immense amounts of dedication.

“To me, being in NHS means being held accountable to the highest standards,” Simmons said. “I feel like it will be very beneficial for me to have to meet certain requirements in academics, and this will allow me to be more comfortable and familiar with the pressure of keeping the high standards that are included in NHS.”

Members must complete 40 hours of community service per school year. Caffey says hours may include assisting with events like Olney In America, helping with the concession stand, volunteering at a nursing home, or helping a church with vacation Bible school.

“I am most excited for the opportunities that NHS offers,” Simmons said. “I will be able to take part in volunteer activities that will definitely strengthen my character and allow me to develop important skills that will help me succeed in life.”
