New pool makes a splash in Olney

After a few delays, the municipal swimming pool made its big debut on July 9 to the delight of the citizens of Olney. The new facility hosted a “splash day” party for the opening day of the pool, when admission was free.

The facility features a diving board, a covered area with plenty of tables and plenty of pool furniture for those wanting to work on their tans or just lounge about absorbing the sun’s warm rays in between taking dips in the pool. A pool slide will be installed at a later date, City Administrator Simon Dwyer said.

Mr. Dwyer said about 70 people attended the opening day festivities.

The pool managers ask that you bring cash only for the snack bar and pool entry fee. Laughter and splashing could be heard all throughout Tom Griffin Park on splash day. All credit is due to the members of the hard-working organization, Keep Olney Beautiful [KOB] and employees of the City of Olney who work endlessly on hosting fundraisers and allocating funds for the new city pool, not to mention assembling the pool furniture. Thanks to KOB and the City of Olney, the community now boasts a completely renovated park for the community to create endless memories in, with room for some additional improvements in the future with possibly a skateboard park and new basketball courts.

City Pool hours are: Tuesday thru Sunday noon till 5 p.m., the cost to enter is Age: Up to age 9-$1, Age: 10 through 17-$2 and Age: 18 and Over$3. The pool is located at Tom Griffin Park at South Avenue M and West Springcreek Road.

The pool managers plan a family night in the future and more activities. For more information on future events please visit their Facebook page: Olney City Pool.
