We humans sure are complicated. We set goals on things we want to obtain or complete and work hard towards those goals. We have hopes and dreams, sometimes they are fulfilled and sometimes they are just meant to be dreams that are not obtainable.
Humans yearn for what they don’t have or think they want and then when we obtain those things sometimes, we find out it’s just not what we want or thought it would be different then the reality of the thing we yearned for. It seems that the grass always seems greener on the other side and then sometimes after getting to that new pasture we realize it was much greener on the side I was on before.
In some ways I think the yearning to want what we don’t have is a good thing, it gives us hope and the will to push through difficult times. When that yearning becomes an all-consuming obsession though, obtain it at any cost, it can have real dire consequences. Examples of when a yearning goes bad could be obtaining a new car, new console game or even candy from a store by stealing or breaking the law to get the thing we desire. An example of a good yearning could be working extra hours at a job to get a promotion or maybe working extra jobs to save for something we desire.
I think yearnings and desires are built into humans to give us hope and something to look forward to. Remember when we were kids and wanting something so bad and waiting all year to hopefully get it for Christmas or working all year for that special vacation getaway? Desire and yearnings are helpful in those ways and having nothing to look forward to is really a dark place to be. As a Chistian I yearn to be in the presence of God and Jesus and know that to obtain that yearning or thing I want most I will have to work hard but what I love most about it is the hope it gives me and always having something to look forward to. I falter and sin but what keeps me going is knowing that it will have an amazing pay off in the end, so I keep the fire of that yearning ablaze in my heart daily, I keep that hope in my mind as much as possible. When you yearn for something with all you are then you have to keep your eye on the prize and keep pushing forward no matter what life throws in your way. Psalm 119:10 “I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.”
This is Will B saying, keep Jesus in your heart at all times and let’s yearn for a time when we will be with God.
