Freezin’ For A Reason raises over $11,000

Freezin’ For A Reason raised more than $11,000 for local American Cancer Society patients and scholarships at its March 2 charity golf tournament, thanks to a healthy turnout, organizer Kalynn Philipp said.

Golf carts swamped the clubhouse at Olney Country Club on the warm and sunny morning of the tournament, with golfers coming from as far away as Fort Worth to play.

The winners of the tournament were Wayne Hobson, Lisa Hobson, Nate Hobson and Mike Hobson.

The Hobson team bested 26 other competitors to take home hand-crafted trophies created by Olney High School’s Ag Mechanics welding students.

Aaron Ermis of Seymour won the “Closest to the Pin” contest.

Freezin’ For A Reason began a decade ago as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, Mrs. Philipp said. The organizers decided to keep the fundraiser local to ensure that funds were available for ACS patients in Olney, she said.

Over the past 10 years, FFAR has raised enough funds to donate more than $70,000 to people and charitable organization in Olney.

For the past three years, the charity has created nine $1,000 scholarships, she said.

The event, which has become a yearly rite of spring in Olney, consists of a golf scramble, a silent auction, a raffle, meal and a dance.
