Filing window opens for City Council races

The filing period opens on Jan. 17 for candidates for city council, school board and hospital district in Olney and Newcastle.

Applications to file can be submitted until Friday, Feb. 16. The election is set for Saturday, May 4 with early voting running from Monday, April 22 through Tuesday, April 30.

The last day to register to vote in the municipal election is Thursday, April 4.

Olney City Council

The Olney City Council will have four positions up for election in May. The seats are currently held by Mayor Rue Rogers, Mayor Pro Tem Tom Parker and Councilmember Tommy Kimbro. Mr. Parker said he will not run for re-election, and will step down from his City Council seat to focus on his duties with the Olney Economic Development Corporation. The Council will name an interim Councilmember to serve until the May 4 election, Mayor Rogers said.

Mayor Rogers and Mr. Kimbro are running for re-election.

Candidates must be at least 21 years of age, a registered Texas voter, and reside within the city limits for the preceding 12 months.

Candidates must submit a completed application for a place on the ballot to City Secretary Tammy Hourigan.

Olney ISD

The Olney Independent School District has three board seats up for election in May. They are occupied by Kenley Lane, Jodee Wales and Mark McClelland. To file as a candidate for an OISD seat, applicants must be a registered voter in Archer, Baylor, Throckmorton or Young County, and residents within the district boundaries. Candidates must submit applications to the OISD election coordinator.

Newcastle ISD

Newcastle ISD has three board seats up for election in May. The seats are now held by Michael Crossland, Anthony Ford and Tradd Strawbridge. To file as a candidate, applicants must live within the NISD boundaries, complete an application for a place on the ballot and submit the application to the superintendent.

OHH Board of Directors

The Olney Hamilton Hospital Board of Directors has five seats up for election in May. Those seats are held by Bob Craig, Rita Choat, Randy Whitmire, Ron Rogers and Lyndsey Miller.

Prospective candidates must be residents of the OHH hospital district and registered voters. Employees of the hospital district may not serve as board members.

Candidates must complete an application with OHH administrative assistant Grace Perez.
