Newcastle library gets funds for Spanish language books
The Olney Community Library received a $650 project stipend for the purchase of books written in Spanish for students that transfer into the school system without a good background in reading English.
The Beta Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma with members in Seymour, Olney, Archer City and Newcastle saw a growing need for the availability of books written in Spanish in the school libraries. They applied in the spring for a project stipend through Alpha State Texas Educational Fund (ASTEF). A project stipend means that their chapter will contribute to the project throughout the next school year through donations and books to the local libraries along with the money received from ASTEF. This summer in June at the state convention in McAllen, Beta Sigma was awarded $1389. Twenty four Texas chapters were awarded a total of $36702.90.
Beta Sigma is comprised of 29 outstanding women educators that are currently teaching and retired in 4 school districts. Scholarships are given out to young women entering the teaching profession. We also work to mentor new teachers entering our schools. Meetings are held once a month in various homes and towns.
