Olney Senior Cub Center Chats
By Pat Curtis
Wow! Whata day September 8, 2022, was! The people of Olney once again demonstrated their kindness and concern by participating in our TEXOMA GIVES activities at The Cub Center. Coffee and donuts began our slate of activities with some snagging more than one to munch on. Lots of visiting and laughter started off our day and continued through the afternoon.
BINGO was a blast as people shouted out their winning numbers to happy clapping from the other players, and a few moans from some who were ‘one away’ from a win. Most of the participants won at least once so it was deemed a success, and those who didn’t win consoled themselves with
a donut! Win - Win!
The large crowd that stayed for lunch was treated to a delicious meal of ham, sweet potato casserole, hot roll, lime jello with pears, and squash. It was a meal fit for royalty, and we royally enjoyed it. Our cooks did an outstanding job!
A painting class began at 1:00 with the theme being two Halloween cats sitting on a fence,
with one cat sporting a big witch-type hat. Those purples and blacks made for a striking picture, indeed!
The domino crew played some eighty-four hands amid a bit of teasing and overbidding. The second game is always lively since that is the NELLO round. Some creative bidding and overbidding are rampant in that particular round. And, the widow is not always kind to the top bidder.
My spotlight this week is shining on Angela Lockard, the director of Cub Center. She juggles kids, school, daycare, and and her job here. She’s like a super woman who navigates her mom duties and works diligently to create new activities for The Center. She started weekly brainstorming activities with the cooks to enhance the flavor and quality of our meals and that strategy is making a difference. She has also been busy researching and writing applications for grants. She is a human dynamo who deserves accolades for her efforts and hard work to enhance people’s lives. She is a big hearted lady who
moves those short legs at warp speed to take care of The Center’s needs and those of our clientele. Please compliment her on the outstanding job she is doing. The success of our TEXOMA GIVES fundraiser is due to Angela’s diligence and guidance. Pop in and tell her in person that you appreciate the outstanding job she is doing.
All of you who have crape myrtles are blessing our eyes with those glorious blossoms. The recent rains really have given those trees a big boost and they are producing those pink, purple, red, white, and bright purple flowers in masses. When I moved here I had a flower garden created in my backyard, and crape myrtles we’re a priority with me. Several varieties of blooming shrubs were also included, along with a few rose bushes and flowers. A big Thank You to all of you who tend those beautiful crape myrtles for our enjoyment as we drive down the streets of Olney.
Whatever you do, do with kindness. A bit of kindness can change the direction of someone’s life.
