Olney Senior Cub Center Chats

Beautiful Olney! My return to town last week was a feast for my eyes. Green, green everywhere! That big rain really perked up the grass and trees. The closer I got to Olney; the scenery grew more vibrant with dozens of shades of that soothing color green. Lovely! Ponds are now full, so ranchers have heaved a sigh of relief; water hauling is now out of the picture. But other parts of our great state of Texas and many areas of the nation are suffering from a severe drought and the constant threat of wildfires. So, please put those areas on your prayer list and pray for rain!

It is officially spring! Those beautiful flowers and shrubs declare it so. Their sweet aromas bring us joy, but the other side of that proverbial coin is not so pleasant. Those furry little black and white critters are also quite aromatic but not pleasant. How can anything with such cute faces smell so terrible?! The scent reminds me of babies at the diaper-changing time. Cute faces, but...!

JOY. What exactly does that mean? That depends on your frame of reference, age and background. Happiness is not joy, although it is part of it. However, kindness to others, respect for others, and love for fellow human beings can bring us joy and the recipients of our actions and feelings. So, let’s plant seeds of kindness and watch them grow into bushels of joy!

April 28 was our birthday celebration day at the Center, so we all joined in singing “Happy birthday” to Don Wainwright. He’s a great guy and deserving of many pats on the back or handshakes, so congratulate him next time you see him.

Next Saturday is the big fish fry sponsored by the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department. Delicious food served up by great people! Remember May 6 to head to Newcastle at 5:00 to munch down on mouth-watering fish with all the trimmings while swiggin’ a glass of ice-cold tea. You’ll thank yourself for going!

The buttercups and bluebonnets are blooming. Those highway workers who toss those flower seeds deserve our praise. That touch of added color and beauty to our roadways is much appreciated! But be aware of the danger before you sit your child down in bluebonnets for a picture-taking session! Snakes like to slither around pretty flowers, too!

This week I’d like to thank our piano guy at the Center, who is always willing to tickle those ivories for our birthday parties when we sing. Sometimes he comes a little early to practice, so we get entertained before lunch. He plays piano and organ for different churches and events, also. He is a talented and good-humored man with a kind heart and ready smile-- that man is our own J.R. Smith! THANK YOU, J.R.!

Don’t forget that the Center is open, so come eat with us. Bob Dillard’s nice Donna Renfro ate with us last week, and she brought her mother-in-law, Allie Chambers, with her. What a pleasure to meet these two ladies. We look forward to them eating with us often. A good inexpensive meal awaits--- come on down, everyone!

Remember that life gives us choices. Choose to be happy!
