New intern at Olney Enterprise

Who are you?

I am 17 and in the 11th grade at Olney High School. I was born in Lewisville, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. I like to play saxophone - my favorite musical genre is jazz. I want to write news articles because I enjoy talking to new people and learning about the community’s issues. I occasionally read; a couple of my favorite books from the past year are George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. I have won multiple accolades in University Interscholastic League, Band and Debate. Some of these include (but are not limited to) regional Band qualifier (three years), fifth place in Band at the regional level, state qualifier in the Solo/ Ensemble Band contest, the first team in Spelling at the district level (two years), the first team in Literary Criticism at the district level, fifth in the UIL Congress Contest at the regional level, and third in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the district level. I also participate in the Youth Symphony Orchestra in Wichita Falls and have soloed in the Midwestern State University Wind Ensemble Band.

What made you want to intern at Olney Enterprise?

I knew that I loved writing since I was a little kid. I wrote multiple short stories for my teachers and peers to read when I was younger and discovered I was pretty good at it when I got older. In addition, I have always loved writing science fiction stories: when I was five, I wanted a dog, so I wrote and illustrated a little book about my adventures with a space puppy. I also love reading and English in general, so when a spot opened up at Olney Enterprise, I knew I wanted to fill it. So far, I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to master newspaper style.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My favorite thing in Olney is hanging out at Sonic and listening to music while sipping on a large Cherry Coke. I also like to go to Tommy Perkins Park to work on homework and rest from school. When I was little, I used to call it “My Park.” My favorite vacation spots are Phoenix, Arizona (or more specifically Camelback Mountain) and Red River Ski Resort in New Mexico. I like Phoenix not only because of the hiking trails on Camelback Mountain but because of the hundreds of pretzel shops in and around the town. Red River is great because of the difficult ski slopes they offer and the delicious mom-and-pop restaurants located near basecamp.

What do you want to do once you graduate?

When I graduate, I want to attend Midwestern State University and major in Music Education. I want to be a Band teacher or a journalist in the future, and I want to play in the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra.
