Life Gets Tee-Jus, Don’t it?
In the late 1940s, there was an old country-western song titled “Life Gets Tee-Jus, Don’t it.” Recently, I thought of that old song and looked it up on YouTube and listened to it again. The lyrics are rather depressing, and I think sometimes we find ourselves in that mode of thinking about the world around us today.
In the late 40s and early 50s, we listened to the radio a lot before T.V. was available in our area. I remember listening to “The Lone Ranger” in the evening and radio “soap operas” in the afternoon. As young teens, on summer afternoons, we would call the Graham radio station KSWA and request country western songs to be played. I remember hearing that old song “Life Gets Tee-Jus Don’t It.”
Life was so simple and seemed easy in my young teen mind during those years. There were Saturday afternoon movies, ice cream at 5 cents a scoop. And Coke/Dr Pepper 5 cents a bottle. And, as I started to drive, there was gasoline for 21 cents a gallon!
In 1952, my family bought a new black Buick. I got my permit, and soon I got my license to drive. We didn’t have driver’s Ed in those days and just practiced with a parent in the car. We had a family friend that taught me to parallel park, and I was “ready to go!” That 21 cent a gallon gas was great. I could drive around a long time with no thought of running out of gas.
Very few children actually had a car of their own during my teen years. One day my dad bought a very old Studebaker and gave it to me. I was rather embarrassed to be seen in it, but my pride did not keep me from driving it around town and to school!
So here we are in 2022, and just hoping that gas will not go any higher at the pump today! Or that our grocery store will continue to be able to stock the shelves. Our country is certainly experiencing some unusual times.
“Life Get’s Tee-Jus, Don’t It?” Keep praying. Listening to the large console radio. circa the 1940s
