OVFD saves Brazos’ warehouse
On March 16, high winds created a high fire damage threat. The Olney Volunteer Fire Department [OVFD] quickly responded to a blaze located in the area of FM 3329 and Herring Road, near the Brazos Communications warehouse, along with residential structures in the direct path of the fire. OVFD’s quick response helped save the warehouse and homes.
Although OVFD was first on the scene, the fire still consumed around 128 acres. The fire could not have been contained without the help of many other fire departments, including Archer City, Loving, Newcastle, Salt Creek, Murray, Graham, Elbert and Texas A&M Forestry Service.
Shown in one photo, you may notice an OVFD fireman starting a fire along the road, which is a typical strategy for most fire departments. They create fire breaks to help contain the fire. By burning vegetation around a fire, it robs the fire of fuel. With the fire breaks strategically placed, fire is contained with nowhere to go.
