Support Bubba Salinas With Your Signature
Consider making a difference by signing a petition to help Luis “Bubba” Salinas earn his high school credit for the band. Bubba is the son of Charlie and Colleen Salinas—former residents and graduates of Olney High School. While residing in Olney, Colleen Jones Salinas attended the First United Methodist Church. The family is reaching out to the community in Olney and the surrounding areas to support the online petition for Bubba.
As mentioned in the article posted on the Change.org website, Bubba, a sophomore and marching band member at Jordan High School, has been denied his fine art credit for participating in the band. According to Change.org, “Katy ISD has unfairly stated that [Bubba] should not receive his fine art credit for participating in band, solely because he ‘does not meet grade-level expectations…’ due to his disability.”
Colleen told Olney Enterprise that the school wants to put study hall in lieu of band on Bubba’s high school schedule, and she believes this is unfair treatment because of Bubba’s autism.
The family plans to go to Austin Oct. 27 to continue the discussion she had with the local senators and representatives. Colleen added that they are grateful for the support they have received thus far. As of Friday, Oct. 7, she said they had received more than 13,000 signatures along with encouraging comments in support of Bubba.
Colleen’s plea to the Olney Community and surrounding areas, “We would like to get as many signatures as possible before the school board meeting Oct. 25. We plan to present the petition at the Katy ISD school board meeting.”
