The Young County Junior Livestock Show (YCJLS) went as planned this year with no issues. Olney FFA teacher Kevin Kaase said even with all the Covid-19 issues this year, he was not even sure the class would be able to show in person or not. Kaases plan was to have the students build entries that the shop could use in case of cancellation.
Some of the items built included a shop table, a sheet metal rack and a welder’s cart. “My goal was to get the students out of their comfort zone this year,” stated Kaase. Because of the lack of wood projects in this year’s YCJLS, Kaase says they plan on adding to that area for the following year. He also stated that the FFA is a great way for kids to increase their ability to speak in public and is also a great way to learn about how to manufacture useful items for around shops, farms or ranches.
Some highlights from the AG Mechanics Division: Jonathan Melcher (Olney FFA) for winning Grand Champion with his shop table. Will Bernhardt (Olney FFA) for winning Reserve Grand Champion for his portable grill. Chase Ford and Tristin Weeks (Newcastle FFA) for winning wood division with their rabbit hutch. Chase Ford and Christian Chapla who won Overall Top Showmen, and Buckley Whitaker for winning Junior Showmen with his presentation of his bumper and flatbed.
