Commercial Steer Speech

Julia Lewis (Olney FFA) represented Olney well during the Commercial Steer Speech portion of the Young County Junior Livestock Show (YCJLS). Lewis said her speech is about her commercial cattle project and the vaccines they administer to the cattle.

Lewis stated, “I just really enjoy cows a lot and plan to make a career as an AG Teacher. So, it’s best to have a lot of experience in the field you go into.” Lewis imparted some advice to any younger kids wanting to get into the FFA or 4H program; “It’s a great opportunity for anyone of all ages, just find something your interested in and just try it.”

Haylee Haralson, Olney ISD’s AG teacher is a huge part of the success of the Olney FFA program. Haralson spends countless hours helping, mentoring and teaching the kids of the Olney FFA to make sure they are prepared for YCJLS.

“I was kind of worried about Covid-19, about how things would be different, but everyone has done a good job and rolling with the punches. If a child wanted to get into showing (animals), it is best to get involved with FFA or 4H. 4H is going to have a lot of stuff for younger kids, whereas FFA is more geared towards Highschool age kids,” said Haralson.

Haralson says whichever route the kids take, Olney FFA is always there to help any way they can. Most kids will sponsor their own animal as far feed and training go. If anyone was looking to help, it is best to donate to the Olney Finance Committee or purchase the show animals after the Junior Livestock Show. If interested in donating funds please call Jordan Haralson at 940-366-2888.
