Young County Democrats and Republican are taking turns holding their conventions this week at the Young County Courthouse on Saturday.

The Democrats will meet at 11 a.m. in the County Courtroom on the ground floor of the Courthouse.

The Democrats are set to meet for an hour to select their delegates to the June 6-8 Texas Democratic Convention in El Paso, said Jeff French, Young County Democratic Party Chairman.

The local convention also is “the starting point” for Young County Democrats to participate in all aspects of the state convention, including proposed legislation, Mr. French said.

“Another important County Convention component is the development of Resolutions to present at the State Convention,” Mr. French said. Attendees can propose resolutions on any issue, such as public education and teacher pay, gun control, border control or disaster funding for the Panhandle wildfire ranchers, he said.

The convention is open only to Democratic primary voters or for those who will sign an Oath of Affiliation with the Democratic Party at the convention, he said.

The local party will select its delegates to the Texas Republican Convention in San Antonio on May 23-25, Jennifer McDonald, Young County Republican Party chairwoman said.

Anyone who voted in the primary may particiapte as a delegate in their Republican precinct convention, she said.

One may also participate as a delegate by signing an oath of affiliation. Delegates to the precinct convention elect permanent convention officers, elect delegates and alternates to their county or state senatorial district convention and pass or defeat resolutions presented by delegates, she said.

If not elected as a delegate or alternate to the county/senatorial district Convention, participants may still become a state convention delegate or alternate by applying to the nominations committe at the County Convention, she said.
