Young County 4H sponsors Scholarship "Drive"

As the Texas summer heat continues to melt blacktop throughout North Texas, one local organization is planning to help one lucky winner beat the heat – with cold, hard cash, or a new SUV.

Tickets are currently on sale for the Young County 4H Adult Leaders Club’s 8th Annual Scholarship “Drive.” The grand prize winner of the raffle will win a 2016 GMC Terrain SUV OR a $20,000 cash prize option.  The first runner up winner will receive a $500 VISA gift card and the second runner up winner will receive a $250 VISA gift card.  There will only be 400 tickets sold for the raffle.

The event will feature a dinner and “draw down” on Saturday, Aug. 13th at the Young County Arena.  Ticket holders will receive two passes to the dinner, dance, and live & silent auction held that evening.

“The Young County community has been incredibly supportive of our efforts over the past several years and we are proud to once again be able to raise money to help the youth of Young County 4H,” said Adult Leader’s President Misti Ondricek. “This has become a fun annual event for all involved and we want to keep up that tradition of helping our kids with scholarships at the next level.  Due to the overwhelming support and generosity of raffle supporters, we have been able to offer more scholarships to our 4H youth.  We award scholarships for college, team competitive events, leadership opportunities, projects, camps, as well as monetary scholarships for each club throughout the county.  Five years ago the statewide 4H program changed in that they began to charge an enrollment fee to become a member of 4H.  Because of the success of this fund raiser, we are also able to pay the enrollment fee for each and every child in Young County that wants to be involved in 4H.”  Ondricek continued to say, “The success of the 4H in Young County is growing. We have members representing our county on a local, county, district, state, and national level in various competitions.  Each year we are able to offer more programs due to generosity and helpful volunteers.  We not only have a vast number of members in the animal aspect of 4H, but we also have a tremendous amount of children involved in community service, food and nutrition, clothing, quilting, photography, leadership, public speaking, consumer decision making, judging teams, shooting sports, science, engineering and technology, fishing, robotics, small engine repair, and the list goes on and on.”

The “draw down” will begin just after the dinner, with names pulled from the hopper at different intervals throughout the night. The last five tickets remaining will be auctioned off through the live auction. The last ticket auctioned will be done with just 10 names left in the hopper. But Ondricek reminds perspective buyers of previous years events.

“Just because we auction off a few tickets the night of, doesn’t mean it’s an automatic winner,” she said. “All of our winners have been from tickets purchased prior to the event”

Ticket buyers do not have to be present to win.  Tickets may be purchased by one individual or the cost may be shared by a group of individuals.  Tickets to the event are $100 each and include two tickets to the activities on Aug. 13th. Tickets are available at the Young County Extension Agent’s Office in Graham, Adult Leaders members, or by calling the Young County Extension Office at 940-549-0737.
