Steven Harvey Cookout a Success

The Steven Harvey Memorial Baseball Scholarship was started in 2004 by Jeff and Tami Harvey and Steven’s family. Steven was killed in a car accident on May 7, 2004 in Muleshoe, Texas. Steven was a lifelong resident of Olney and graduated from Olney High School in 2002. He attended college and received his certificate of completion to be a lineman from South Plains College in Levelland in May of 2004, just before the accident.

Besides his family and friends, one of his greatest loves was baseball. Steven started playing as soon as he could throw a ball and continued to play until he graduated high school. He was quick and had a great arm. He played second base and shortstop for the Olney Cubs. His number was retired in 2005, only to be brought out of retirement if his younger brother, Cody, wanted to wear the number, which of course he wore with pride! This scholarship was started to help senior boys who played baseball for the Cubs to further their education. In selecting the recipients, the Harveys look for traits similar to Steven’s personality. Tami Harvey said he was kind, funny, had great sportsmanship, and showed true leadership to his team.

This year’s meal will be the 19th year for the barbecue in Steven’s honor. “We have been able to give out over $60,000 worth of scholarships,” Tami Harvey said. “Of course, none of this would be possible without the blessing, support, and donations we have received from our family, friends, and the amazing Olney community.”
