State Fair Results for Olney High School FFA

The state fair took place on Sept. 30, and brothers Kaiden and Mason Johnson showed pigs in the State Fair of Texas Barrow show. Mason showed a duroc burrow, and Kaiden showed a spot barrow. Due to inadequate features, neither of their pigs placed in the show, according to the FFA sponsor. The show, however, was a great learning opportunity for both, as well as a great time.

“Showing animals can be encouraging but discouraging at the same time. Every contest is based on muscling, fat coverage, confirmation, gait, handling and many other things. Ultimately you are up against the judges opinion,” said Kara Roberts, Ag Science teacher. “Not all judges are the same, some prefer more fat over muscle or vice versa. You just do what you can and what you train as right and hope that in that contest it is what the judge is looking for.”

Even though they didn’t place, she said the Johnson brothers learned more about showing animals and what is required for their animals.
