Springer vs. Luther
Drew Springer and Shelley Luther are entering the homestretch on the campaign trail for the Texas State Senate. A public forum will be held between the two candidates on Dec. 8 at the Young County Arena at 6 p.m. It will be held by the Young County Republicans during their monthly meeting. The special election that Governor Abbot approved will be held Dec. 19 to determine who will replace Senator Pat Fallon. Early voting begins Dec. 9.
According to the Texas Tribune, the Sept. 29 special election resulted in a margin between Luther and Springer that was so close, with Luther leading by 164 votes.
Luther said she wants to debate with Springer to allow people to know her story before casting a vote Dec. 19. In a previous article published in Olney Enterprise, she also stated that her goal is not to become a career politician as opposed to Springer’s eight years as the District 68 representative.
“Being a schoolteacher, I would be a huge asset in the education committee working alongside Mrs. Angela Paxton, who is also a retired schoolteacher. Mr. Springer has zero experience teaching in a school, and he does not know exactly how a school operates. I don’t want liberal curriculum forced into our schools,” Luther said in an Olney Enterprise article published Nov. 12.
Springer, on the other hand, intends to focus on his experience because he said it takes experience to get things done. He told Olney Enterprise previously that he is running for senate because he will have an opportunity to do more for his constituents.
“You have more ability as a senator to put your input into every single issue that comes up as opposed to being a specialist as a representative,” Springer said in the Olney Enterprise article published Oct. 22. “My specialties, as a representative, have been rural issues and taxes. As a senator, I will be able to do more in areas like public education and health care and fight to ensure rural broadband to every single Texan,” Rep. Springer said.
Luther is fighting to make sure we have no more lock downs going forward, as well as transparency. While Springer is touting his experience in the Texas State house to help lead us through in this difficult time during COVID-19. Luther made national headlines this the summer when she was put in jail for keeping her business open during the pandemic, even though she had put the correct COVID-19 protocols in place in her hair salon. The incident even led to an appearance for Luther on Sean Hannity’s nightly show on Fox News. Springer has the endorsement of Governor Greg Abbot and Texas congressman elect, Pat Fallon.
Both campaigns encourage potential voters to attend on Tuesday, Dec. 8 as the candidates make their final pitch to Young County residents. Visit the candidates’ websites to learn more about their political platform before the Dec. 8 debate.
