Spiller Wins HD 68 Republican Primary; Stewart wins JP

In the race for HD 68, incumbent David Spiller wins more than 80 percent of the votes against Craig Carter (9.17 percent votes), Mark Middleton (4.34 percent votes) and Gary Franklin 3.39 percent votes)

“I am humbled and honored by the support and trust shown by the voters to allow me to serve my first full term. I look forward to continuing our work together in Austin to advance and defend the conservative principles, values, and beliefs of the people of House District 68. Thank you to the 30,000 voters who came out to vote in this important primary election,” Spiller said in a statement.

Another race followed closely by Olney residents was the race for Precinct 3 justice of the peace to replace Stan Mahler. The race was close between Republican candidates Joey Stewart, who won 52 percent of the votes, and Lonnie Wales securing 48 percent.

The Young County Commissioner’s race for Precincts 2 and 4 was also close. Scott Shook (Rep.) secured the seat with 53 percent of the vote, followed by Matt Pruitt (Rep.) with 47 percent. Incumbent Jimmy Wiley won 55 percent of the vote, followed by Rob Ward with 45 percent of the vote. The redistricting map appeared to cause issues with Wales not appearing on the ballot for some voters. The election officials at Olney library said there was only one case in Olney on Election Day, and they were able to verify the voter’s information and resolve the problem.

Brenda Stennett said, “We contacted the 911 office and verified the voter’s address. Then, we followed the instructions from our elections administrator and resolved the issue. I believe there may have been similar issues in Graham, but we only had one person with this issue in Olney today.”

Olney Enterprise reached out to the Young County Elections Administrator, Kaitlyn Mosley but did not receive a response before the publication of this article.

The other primary races that may be of interest to Young County residents are as follows: For governor, Republican Greg Abbott (71 percent Young County Votes, 66 percent statewide) versus Democrat Beto O’Rourke (92 percent Young County Votes, 92 percent statewide); For lieutenant governor, Republican Dan Patrick (80 percent Young County Votes, 77 percent statewide) versus Democrat Michael Collier (42 percent Young County Votes, 42 percent statewide). Uncontested incumbents who will continue representing Olney are State Senator for District 30, Drew Springer (Republican), and U.S. Representative for District 25, Roger Williams (Republican)—both advocated heavily for the 10 propositions listed on the Republican Primary Ballot, which the majority of voters supported across the board.
