Senior Cub Center’s Souper Bowl lunch fundraiser, Feb. 2

Feb. 2 is not only Superbowl Sunday, but also SOUPer Bowl Sunday for the Olney Senior Cub Center. The lunch fundraiser will start at 11:30 a.m. and end around 1:30 p.m., just in time for you to watch the game. The Senior Cub Center is located at 302 S. Avenue B in Olney. The tickets cost $8 and are sold in advance but are also available at the door. The staff welcomes everyone, including individuals, families and church groups. If you do not have time to dine in, carry-outs are available.

The stew lunch includes homemade stew with fresh vegetables that are simmered all night. Also, hot cornbread and a dessert, which may be your choice of peach cobbler or chocolate pie, are included in the meal.

All proceeds benefit the programs at the Olney Senior Cub Center, which has been supporting the senior citizens of Olney since 1982, when the center was incorporated as a senior center. The organization is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization and donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The Souper Bowl and the Pancake Breakfast are the only two annual fundraisers for the Senior Cub Center. The center also earns money through lunch sales Monday through Friday. Lunch is available to the public, but lunch guests should RSVP in advance because a small lunch portion is set aside for the public. Lunch prices vary: Senior citizens 60 or older are asked to pay $4, and anyone under 60 is asked to pay $6. Their weekly menu is located on Page 2 in Olney Enterprise on the calendar page. Executive Director Jerri Corbin said they do not turn anyone away.

“We want to reach those who are less fortunate. We used to serve 65 meals a day, and we are currently serving 20 to 25 meals at the center and approximately 65 home deliveries. On our home delivery plan, we partner with the Texas Department of aging who covers a larger portion of the cost of the meal,” Corbin said. “Approximately 40 of the home-delivered meals are free, and the Texas Department of Aging determines eligibility and reimburses the center. We need and appreciate your support of this important fundraiser.”

Although the senior citizens who are not eligible for the free meals are asked to make a $4 donation, Corbin said many are unable to pay, and that’s where donations make up the difference. Your support of the two annual fundraisers will help offset expenditures.

The center does more than provide lunch; it is a fun place for seniors to participate in various activities and contests. Currently, a small group of seniors plays dominoes in the afternoon. The center is open five days a week from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The center is operated by the director along with eight parttime employees and volunteers.
