Scam Calls Cause Unease

A new rash of scam calls is causing distress among local citizens according to the Olney Police Department.

“We have had a few reports of scam type calls,” says Deena Clark of the Olney Police Department. “Most of the calls we have had are people claiming to be from the IRS and they state a warrant has/or will be issued for your arrest. People need to be made aware that the IRS will not call you on the phone and threaten to have you arrested.”

The Olney police department received this message from the Seymour PD.

“ATTENTION: We are getting reports of telemarketers (scammers) that are stating you qualify for a back brace, or there is a problem with your credit card, or they are a computer tech company and can no longer provide services you have paid for in the past and please stay on the line in order to get your credit. All these are scam type of calls. Keep in mind if these companies really have done business with you, or you are pre-qualified for something then they should not need your information, they should have it.

As we come upon the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, we will see an increase in these types of calls/ scams along with many other ones we have posted on in the past. If you have any family or friends not on Facebook, please take the time to warn them about these scams.

The Seymour Police Department has handouts on common scams seen by the FBI and handouts on identity theft and steps to take to prevent identity theft, and handouts to recover your identity after identity theft. Please stop in and grab copies if interested.

BE SAFE, BE CAUTIOUS, BE SUSPICIOUS WHILE GETTING RANDOM CALLS, ONLINE, AND IN PERSON WITH STRANGERS.”
