Rep. Springer Pledges Funds to Urge Citizens to Take 2020 Census

Completing the 2020 Census form is one of the most important things you can do as a citizen. Many people don’t realize how the census helps the government understand the facets of every community. The census is used to determine how funding is disbursed, to ascertain the needs of each community and other significant reasons.

In an effort to bring awareness to the importance of completing the 2020 Census, Representative Drew Springer is using his own money to encourage citizens to participate.

“We are doing a poor job of filling out our 2020 Census in HD68. All 22 counties are below both the state and national response rate. Given all that is at stake behind this simple questionnaire, H.D. 68 needs to do better or risk being underfunded and unrepresented over the next decade,” Springer said.

Springer outlined the parameters of the competition as follows: “- The first county in HD68 to have 60% of their citizens fill out their 2020 Census will receive a $250 donation to their Food Bank. - The first county in HD68 to have 75% of their citizens fill out their 2020 Census will receive a $500 donation to their Food Bank. - The first county in HD68 to have 100% of their citizens fill out their 2020 Census will receive a $1,000 donation to their Food Bank.

“The goal of the census is to count every person living in the United States. Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution mandates that this population and housing count occur every ten years. Census data guides how more than $675 billion of federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year - so there is a lot at stake for our rural communities,” Springer emphasized.
