Region 9 schools see 4 traffic deaths

Three students and a parent from Region 9 schools were killed in separate car accidents over the weekend, according to statements by Region 9 and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

On Saturday, Oct. 7, the mother of a Newcastle ISD volleyball player was killed after leaving a game at Bryson, Region 9 officials said in an email on Monday. The volleyball team was following in the bus when the wrech occurred ahead of them, the email said.

The DPS statement said the first crash occurred at 12:55 p.m. on U.S. Highway 380, six miles east of Graham. Kerri Forbus,43, of Newcastle was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in a crash between the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox she was driving and a 2011 Ford F150 towing a 2019 homemade trailer.

Ms. Forbus, who was not wearing a seatbelt, had drifted into oncoming traffic, the DPS statement said. The driver of the Ford truck, Marian Scott, 60, of Bacliff, Texas, and passenger Steven William, 69, of Decatur, Texas, were taken to Graham Medical Center with injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts, the DPS said.

The second, one-vehicle accident occurred at 2:32 a.m. on Oct. 9 on Business U.S. Highway 277, about 1.8 miles northeast of Holliday in Archer County, the DPS statement said.

A 2018 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling northeast on Business US 277 at an unsafe speed and failed to negotiate a curve and went off the roadway at a side skid and struck a culvert, causing it to roll, the DPS statement said. Two 16-year-old male passengers from Iowa Park and a 15-year-old female passenger from Henrietta were pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash, the DPS said. The drier was transported to United Regional Health Care System with incapacitating injuries, the DPS statement said. None of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts, the statement said.
