THE REFUGE Faith That Saved A Nation
“And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14 NASBS
Oh, the gracious mercy of God’s living Word, which brings eternal insight and understanding to mere mortal creatures such as you and me. In the simple question posed to Esther—“Who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”—we behold the mighty hand of God governing the times and epochs of human history. In His sovereign love, He raised up Esther at the precise moment His people needed deliverance.
Satan, working through the ancient hostility of the Amalekites, attempted once again to destroy the covenant people of God. Haman, a descendant of Agag, rose to the powerful position of prime minister in Persia. From this place of influence he devised a plan to exterminate the Jews, fabricating lies to manipulate the king into issuing a decree of death. What Haman did not know was that the Queen he sought to use for his purposes was herself a daughter of Abraham. His plot against God’s people would ultimately secure his own ruin.
This conflict traces back to the days of Moses, when the Amalekites attacked Israel from behind as the people were weary from travel. Though Joshua defeated them, the Lord declared that He would one day blot out their memory from under heaven. Centuries later, Saul was commanded to carry out this judgment but failed through disobedience and fear of man. Yet what Saul did not finish, God Himself would bring to completion through Esther, for no purpose of God can be thwarted.
By God’s sovereign appointment, Esther rose to her royal position at the very moment hell launched its assault. She was a woman marked by faith, courage, piety, and devotion to her people. When she learned of Haman’s wicked scheme, she resolved to approach the king—even though doing so without being summoned could mean immediate death. After fasting, prayer, and the wise counsel of Mordecai, she stepped forward. By God’s providence, the king extended to her the golden scepter, granting favor and opening the way for the salvation of God’s people. Through her obedience, the Lord overturned the evil designed against the nation and preserved His covenant promise.
In our day, our families face the same ancient enemy Esther faced. The apostle Peter tells us that the devil prowls about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Jesus Himself said, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” Though defeated, Satan wages war against the saints through deception, accusation, and temptation. His desire is to overthrow the believer’s testimony, darken holiness, and enslave hearts to destructive patterns and fears.
Yet Christians, like Esther, have been called for such a time as this. By God’s divine power, believers are summoned to tread down the serpent of old through obedience, faithfulness, and holy resolve. The battle is real; it rages daily within the heart. The enemy tempts with fleeting pleasures that destroy and whispers lies meant to shame, confuse, and weaken.
But take courage. The weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are divinely powerful for the destruction of spiritual strongholds. Through Scripture, prayer, and the indwelling Spirit, believers cast down every argument raised against the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to Christ. The victories of God’s people—like the conquest of Canaan—were not won in a day. They were won through endurance. Adopt the spirit of Caleb, who at eighty-five declared, “I am as strong today as the day Moses sent me. Now give me this mountain.”
Do not yield for even a moment to the seductions of this world, but fix your eyes on the cross where redemption was accomplished. The victory Jesus Christ achieved is the believer’s victory. When He rose from the grave, sin was subdued, death was conquered, Satan was vanquished, hell was overthrown, and a crown of eternal life was secured for all who love Him. The serpent’s doom is sealed; his accusations silenced by the blood of the Lamb.
Christian—rise up. You too have been placed in this moment, in this generation, for such a time as this.
