A Prayer for Everyone
This prayer has been upon the lips of countless suffering believers who have placed their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a cry of anguish, a cry for mercy, a cry for help that only the Lord Himself is able to answer. When every earthly resource has been exhausted, when every remedy has failed, and when the burden seems too great to bear, the child of God often finds himself praying these simple but profound words: “Lord, help me!”
“O Lord, infinite in wisdom and perfect in understanding, have mercy upon us. Though we bear Your image, we do so in frail and fallen bodies. Write Your Word deeply upon our hearts. Open the eyes of our understanding that we may behold Your beauty, rest in Your promises, and comprehend the immeasurable love You have for Your people in Christ. Grant us grace to trust Your sovereign will when we cannot understand Your providence, knowing that You cause all things to work together for good to those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the majesty, and the splendor. The kingdom is Yours, and You are exalted as Head over all.”
This passage follows Jesus’ confrontation with the religious leaders in Galilee, whom He exposed as blind guides and hypocrites. From there, He withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon, a journey of approximately forty miles. It was there that God, in His sovereign grace, would bring a Canaanite woman to saving faith and demonstrate His power by delivering her daughter from demonic oppression.
Tyre and Sidon were Gentile regions steeped in paganism and idolatry. This woman had been raised among people who worshiped false gods that could neither hear nor save. Yet the reports concerning Jesus’ ministry had spread beyond the borders of Israel and reached her ears. Unknown to her, God was drawing her to His Son and preparing her heart to trust in the only Savior who could meet her deepest need.
Mark tells us that Jesus entered a house, desiring privacy with His disciples. Yet this desperate mother sought Him out and cried, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed.” Every word that fell from her lips was filled with sorrow and desperation. This was her beloved daughter, the child she had carried, nurtured, and loved. No doubt she had exhausted every avenue available to her. The gods of her people had proven powerless, for idols made by human hands cannot save. She may have often wondered, “Is there anyone who can help my child?” Yet in God’s perfect timing, the Savior Himself had come near.
When she addressed Jesus as “Son of David,” she used a title rich with Messianic significance. She recognized Him as Israel’s promised King and Deliverer. By calling Him “Lord,” she acknowledged His authority and submitted herself to Him. Though she was a Gentile woman, she came believing that Jesus alone possessed the power and mercy she needed.
The Lord then tested her faith, not to destroy it, but to reveal it. Through this encounter, He taught His disciples that true faith perseveres. It clings to Christ even when answers seem delayed. It refuses to let go when circumstances appear discouraging. Her confidence was not in herself but in the mercy of Christ. Like a tree whose roots run deep into the ground, she remained steadfast and continued to plead, “Lord, help me!”
Jesus ultimately declared, “O woman, your faith is great,” and her daughter was healed immediately. The greatness of her faith was not found in the strength of the woman herself, but in the greatness of the Savior upon whom her faith rested. God’s gracious hand reached into her life, rescuing her from darkness and displaying His mercy in such a remarkable way that her account was recorded in Holy Scripture for generations to read.
Through this event, Jesus taught His disciples that true faith is not produced by external rituals, religious traditions, or human merit. It is the gracious work of God in the heart, producing a steadfast trust in Christ. The same Lord who heard the cry of this Canaanite woman still hears the cries of His people today.
Whatever burden you carry, whatever trial you face, continue to come to Christ. Be persistent in prayer. Cast yourself upon His mercy. Cry out, “Lord, help me!” and trust Him with the outcome. His timing is perfect, His wisdom is infinite, and His grace is sufficient. One day, faith shall become sight, every tear shall be wiped away, and every prayer offered in dependence upon Christ will give way to everlasting praise before His throne.
Beloved of God, never forget that a day is coming when you shall wear the crown of righteousness, rejoice in the triumph of sovereign grace, and join the redeemed in giving glory to the Lamb who purchased you with His blood. Until that day, fix your eyes upon Christ and continue faithfully in the path He has set before you. As Thomas Watson wisely said, “Though the way be uphill, yet be not discouraged; for the end of the journey is sweet. You shall have heaven for your reward.”
