Outdoor Fitness Court Moves Toward Fall Installation

Olney’s new outdoor fitness court could be ready for public use this fall now that the exercise equipment has arrived and the project is fully funded, city officials said.

Mayor Rue Rogers told the City Council Sept. 14 that the equipment had been delivered and was being stored at the City barn. The next step is construction of the concrete pad that will support the fitness stations.

The City plans to work with local concrete contractor Gilbert Acuna, who previously completed concrete work near Olney’s swimming pool and playground. Once the pad is poured and cured, professional installers from the National Fitness Campaign are expected to assemble the equipment in two or three days.

Mayor Rogers said October completion may be possible, although November remains the safer estimate. The timing will depend on the concrete work and coordination with the installation crew.

Keep Olney Beautiful developed the project and assembled its funding through local grants, donations, and its own fund balance. Mayor Rogers thanked Tower Extrusions, Air Tractor, the Perry Foundation, and Texas-New Mexico Power among the contributors.

The fitness court is designed to give residents an outdoor place to exercise using a series of body-weight workout stations. Its installation will add another recreation option near the City’s existing park facilities.

Mayor Rogers praised the local support that allowed the project to move forward just a few weeks after the City unexpectedly received the grant for the equipment.
