ORA hosts golf tournament in honor of McClatchy

On July 24, the Olney Recreation Association (ORA) hosted the first golf tournament named “The McClatchy.” The tournament is named after longtime ORA member Jeff McClatchy, who was instrumental in furthering and improving every aspect of the ORA.

After the passing of Jeff McClatchy in 2019, the ORA wanted to find a way to honor such a valued ORA member and past Board President. According to the event organizer and ORA President Landon Rowe, the tournament was possible because of the hard work of the ORA Board, the ORA, family, friends, and the many sponsors of the event. The platinum business title sponsor was Air Tractor. The gold sponsors included Dickey, McGann & Rowe Insurance, Tower Extrusions, The Myers Family, Jeremy and Trina Johnson, and Archer & Gunn Mercantile. Silver Sponsors included Pace-O Cattle, Hometown Coffee & Tea, Dennis Company, Barrington Insurance, SeedTex, Cemco and Texoma Metals, LLC. The Bronze sponsors comprised numerous family and friends of the honoree.

Rowe said it is the biggest tournament the club has ever had. The McClatchy tournament had 65 teams sign up, with many more on standby.

The end of the tournament was special because Jeff McClatchy’s son, Mace, won the Golf Cart raffle during a live drawing. The crowd was pleased with the results and thought it was appropriate that one of Jeff McClatchy’s sons had won the premiere prize.

This scramble-style tournament had tee-offs at two different times of the day—8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Although the day was long and hot, the participants maintained their smiles.

Laughter flowed throughout the day, leading to the announcement of the winning team, Mayor Rue Rogers and Drew McGee.
