The Olney One Arm Dove Hunt began Friday, Sept. 10 through Saturday, Sept. 11.

The organization celebrated 50 years this past weekend. The event draws amputees and supporters nationally who come together every year in Olney. While the event is now in memory of the two Jacks who started the event, the two men—Jack Bishop and Jack Northrup—- called “The One-Arm Jacks, started hosting this event in 1972 because of the loss of their arms.

Bishop lost his arm when he was 2 years old after his cancer diagnosis.

Northrup lost his arm later in life after an automobile accident in 1956.

The Olney One Arm Dove Hunt was established as an annual event that welcomes amputees from across the country. There were only six people at the first event, and it has been growing every year.

Participants enjoyed the kickoff with a golf scramble that took place at Olney Country Club, followed by lunch and a trap shoot. The first day ended with a barbecue by local grill masters featured on Page 6. Saturday’s events began with the famous 10-cents-afinger breakfast, fun fill-in activities and the awards ceremony at the conclusion.

The story continues with photographs on Page 6.
